Since the 15th century, talented citizens have attended high schools and universities in Vienna, Bologna, Pecs, Budapest, Paris and elsewhere. Most prominent writers are: Antun Kanižlić, Vjekoslav Babukić (Croatian revival movement co-funder), Miroslav Kraljević (author of the first modern Croatian novel), Janko Jurković, Vilim Korajac, Josip Eugen Tomić, Franjo Ciraki, Dragutin Lerman, Julije Kempf, Zdenka Marković, Dobriša Cesarić, Matko Peić, Branko Hribar etc.
Nada Prkačin and Lana Derkač are new and promising authors, whose works are greatly appreciated by both readers and literary critics. The most famous Požega painters are: Gustav Poša, Miroslav Kraljević and Jozo Janda.
Požega has been home to such musical figures as the great opera singer Vilma Nožinić and modern composer and musical educator Davorin Kempf.
